10 Things You Didn’t Know About Essential Oils
There’s a lot to read and learn about essential oils. How to use them, where to buy them…the list goes on. But after you’re all read up on the amazing benefits and best practices, there will be a few fun little facts you probably still won’t know. Will these facts help you get more benefits out of the products? Probably not. But a little more knowledge never hurt anyone!
Here are 10 interesting, fun and totally random facts you may have never heard about essential oils:
1. Essential Oils are not Actually “Oils”
Even though they have an oily texture, essential oils lack the fatty acids that are considered the scientific properties of oils. They are the concentrated essence of plants.
2. Essential Oils Are Made Up of Micro Molecules
Speaking of actual oils, the molecular structure of vegetable oil, mineral oil, or any other oil is large enough that absorption into the skin is a slow process. Essential oils, however, are composed of micro molecules, making them easily absorbable into the skin. This property also means they are evenly distributed into the air when diffused for effective inhalation.
3. Essential Oils Can Last 5-10 Years
This is good news since very little oil is needed for each use. That means if you have an oil you use infrequently, you don’t have to worry about tossing it out after a few months. The only exception is citrus oils. They tend to lose some of their potency after a year or so.
4. There Are Not Many Medical Studies Available on Essential Oils
Why? Blame the pharmaceutical companies. Because essential oils are a natural substance and can’t be patented, the big drug companies don’t stand to make a dime on their production. And since these companies are the main ones that fund drug research, there’s not much chance they’ll be studied much any time soon.
5. Essential Oils House a Plant’s Immune System
This natural immune system is probably the reason its healing properties work on other living beings. These oils help protect the plants from fungus and insects.
6. Essential Oils Can Remain in the Blood System for Up to 24 Hours
The nutrients from the essential oils will keep re-circulating throughout your blood stream and eventually exit through the lymphatic system. Staying in your body for such a long time keeps the healing properties active for maximum benefit.
7. Essential Oils Are Up to 100 Times Stronger than Dried Herbs
The potency of these substances are the reason for their quick effectiveness. Because they are extremely concentrated, care should always be taken to ensure proper use and application.
8. Essential Oils Cannot Be Replicated Artificially
Scientists can create a compound with the exact properties and proportions, and it still won’t be an essential oil. Each oil is composed of hundreds, and sometimes thousands of components that are still a mystery to the scientific community.
9. Essential Oils Were Re-Discovered Accidentally
Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, a French chemist and perfumist re-discovered the healing powers of essential oils when he plunged his chemical-burned hands into a bucket of lavender oil. His hands healed pain-free and without scars, leading him to further explore and teach others on the subject. He is known as the Father of Aromatherapy because he coined the phrase “aromatherapie” in 1936.
10. The Study of Essential Oils Dates as Far Back as 3500 B.C.
The use of herbs and oils has been documented on cave walls and ancient scrolls. Egyptians used them ceremoniously and in burials. Evidence was found in the tombs of both Cleopatra and King Tut.
There’s no disputing that essential oils are a unique and fascinating substance that’s been around for centuries. You don’t need a PhD in the subject to experience the rewards, but learning a little more about it certainly doesn’t hurt!
