4 Essential Oils for Focus and Productivity

Do you find it hard to concentrate for long periods of time? Don’t worry -- you’re not alone. The vast majority of people struggle to focus on one task for periods of 30 minutes or longer, hence the popularity of productivity systems like the pomodoro technique.

Whether for success in the workplace or results at university, just about every adult would like to be able to concentrate more easily, focus harder and become more productive. Luckily, essential oils can make great natural productivity boosters to help you get more done in less time.

Below, we’ve listed four essential oils that you can use to naturally enhance your focus and get more done in the workplace or at your study desk. All offer the benefits of greater focus without the negative effects of “smart drugs” such as modafinil and piracetam.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil is widely used in aromatherapy as a wakefulness agent, making it a great oil for helping you stay alert and focused at work. The menthol that makes up 35–45% or peppermint oil’s active ingredient profile clears your sinuses and can “wake up” your mind in the morning.

From a productivity perspective, peppermint oil is more effective at “setting the scene” for hard work than inspiring a sudden burst of productivity.

If you use an oil diffuser, add two to three drops of peppermint oil in the morning to enjoy a rich, wakefulness-promoting scent while you drink your morning coffee. You can also add a few drops of peppermint oil to your shower floor to spread a refreshing menthol scent while you shower.

Lavender Oil

Lavender oil is excellent at removing tension and anxiety, making it a great productivity oil if you typically race from one task to the next. Sometimes, the most effective way to get things done is to slow down and clear your to-do list of all but the most important priorities.

If you need to relentlessly singletask to finish a project or assignment, try diffusing two to three drops of lavender oil in your work environment. The calming, soothing effect will make it easier for you to clear your mind of distractions and focus entirely on the present.

Pine Oil

While pine oil isn’t as widely used as peppermint and lavender oil, it’s every bit as effective as a wakefulness and productivity tool. Pine oil energises your mind and body, giving you the energy and focus you need to work through a lengthy to-do list or finish a challenging assignment.

Because pine oil is also linked to improved confidence, it’s a fantastic oil for staying optimistic in the middle of tough, mentally challenging tasks. Confidence plays a huge role in focus, and pine oil is great for keeping yourself confident, ambitious and focused on producing results.

If you struggle to feel motivation in the morning, try adding two to three drops of pine oil to your oil diffuser. You can also place a few drops of this essential oil on the floor of your shower for an invigorating, energising effect that will last for the first half of your day.

Rosemary Oil

Rosemary oil is a popular pick-me-up for professionals struggling to make it through the week, largely thanks to its stimulating and energising properties. In fact, rosemary oil is so effective as a motivation booster that Entrepreneur listed it as one of the best scents for better productivity.

One of the biggest benefits of rosemary oil is its effects on memory. Scientific studies show that exposure to the scent of rosemary essential oil can improve memory by up to 75%, making it a powerful supplement if your job depends on having a strong short and long-term memory.

According to the study, people that regularly used rosemary oil were 60-75 per cent more likely to “remember to complete tasks at particular times." If you need to get things done on time, try diffusing two to three drops of rosemary essential oil in your oil diffuser every morning.
