Essential Oils for Split Ends…and All Your Other Hair Woes (1 of 2)

Do you use essential oils just for aromatherapy? If so, you’re missing out on a tonne of crazy benefits you may not even know about.

One of our favourite ways to use essential oils is for luxurious, healthy hair. Haircare products have gotten outrageously expensive, and the more “natural” their ingredients, the more you pay. But making your own products with essential oils is a great way to save money and use all-natural products that are actually good for your hair.

If you’d like to get started with your own all-natural haircare regime, this is a great place to begin!

What You Will Need

Lavender essential oil – lavender is a wonderful hydrator. It will deeply condition and repair split ends, dry hair and scalp and prevent breakage.

Cedarwood essential oil – cedarwood encourages hair growth by stimulating the follicles. It will strengthen your hair, repair split ends and prevent frizz.

Rosemary essential oil – rosemary also stimulates hair growth. It’s actually the most popular essential oil for this purpose. It promotes healthy, shiny, frizz-free hair, hydrates, and prevents breakage.

Peppermint essential oil – peppermint stimulates the scalp for healthy hair growth. It also acts as a balancer for oily hair.

Lemon essential oil – lemon acts as an astringent to clean and remove oily buildup.

Clary sage essential oil – clary sage is another stimulant to promote hair growth and prevent hair loss. As an added benefit, clary sage is a natural antidepressant and absorbs especially well through the hair follicles on the scalp.

Tea tree essential oil – tea tree oil is a natural anti-fungal and stimulant. It promotes hair growth, prevents hair loss, effectively treats cradle cap and dandruff, and kills and repels head lice.

Carrier oils – such as almond, grapeseed, or fractionated coconut oil.

If you can’t find your containers locally, you can easily find them on Amazon.

You can always mix the essential oils as needed for your hair treatments, but it’s great to have all your blends made ahead of time for quick access. You’ll need to use coloured glass containers to store your blends in to keep the oils from breaking down.

Are you ready to make your hair gorgeous?

Great! Let’s get to it!

Combine the essential oils with 10-20 ml (depending on length and thickness of hair) carrier oil and massage vigorously into scalp for 2-3 minutes. Leave on for at least 15 minutes before shampooing, or for best results, overnight. For thinning hair, this mixture should be used at least twice per week for maximum results. It can be made ahead of time and stored in a bottle by tripling the amount of ingredients.

Wrapping it Up

Making your own haircare ingredients is both less expensive and safer than most products you can purchase over the counter or from a salon. The results also tend to be much more effective since you’re not adding unnecessary chemicals to your hair when you use them.

Always take into consideration any allergies you or your family members may have and use smaller amounts of essential on children than on adults, especially when using peppermint.
