How to Use Essential Oils for Stronger, Faster Growing Hair

If your hair is falling out, drying out or starting to develop split ends, it’s easy to wonder what’s going wrong. Is is your diet? Your lifestyle? Or has your hair simply decided it isn’t going to do what you want it to do?

The reality of hair care is that while many problems are supposedly best solved with expensive hair products, the actual best solution is more often than not topical application of essential oils like rosemary, lemon and geranium.

When used properly, essential oils can play an important role in fuelling the growth of stronger, healthier hair. Some experts also believe that regular use of essential oils can lead to your hair growing faster, meaning you’ll get more inches of fresh, healthy hair in much less time.

Below, we’ve explained how you can use essential oils to grow longer, healthier, thicker, fuller, better looking hair, all without the three or four-figure annual costs of a conventional high-end hair product routine.

Apply lemongrass oil for thicker, stronger hair

Does your hair feel a little too thin? If your hair doesn’t feel as full as it once did, whether due to use of artificial products or hormonal shedding, one of the easiest ways to strengthen your hair and add extra fullness is by applying lemongrass oil before your morning shower.

Lemongrass oil is an invigorating oil that strengthens hair follicles, giving you thicker, stronger hair without the £100+ costs of many high-end hair products. All it takes to get the benefits of lemongrass oil is a quick oil mask application before your shower, once every week.

To make your own lemongrass hair oil mask, mix three to four drops of lemongrass oil with three full tablespoons of olive oil. Gently massage the formula into your hair (feel free to moisten your hair beforehand) and let it sit for at least 10 minutes before you get into the shower.

After 10 minutes, rinse out the hair mask and shampoo and condition your hair as normal. After three to four weeks of applying this hair mask, you should notice that your hair will begin to feel thicker, stronger and more voluminous.

Use castor oil for faster hair growth

Does your hair grow too slowly? Whether you recently got a short haircut and just don’t like how it looks or want to get the long hair look without resorting to extensions, there’s a great essential oil for hair growth available in the form of castor oil.

Castor oil is one of the richest sources of vitamin E available, making it a great promoter of hair growth. Like lemongrass oil, it’s best applied to your hair as part of a pre-shower hair care mask.

To make a castor oil hair mask, mix equal amounts of castor and coconut oil in a container. You will need to gently heat the coconut oil to mix the two as a liquid if you live in a cool climate. Mix the oils together thoroughly and gently massage the solution into your scalp and hair.

Let the castor oil hair mask sit for 20 to 30 minutes, then thoroughly rinse your hair. After you’ve rinsed out the hair mask, shampoo and condition your hair as normal. Try this mask once every one or two weeks to give your hair growth rate a boost and grow longer hair in less time.

Two essential oils -- it really is that simple

While almost all of the essential oils have hair benefits, the two we’ve listed above -- lemongrass oil and castor oil -- are the most effective for strengthening your hair and increasing the speed at which it grows.

Try rotating both essential oils as hair masks on a weekly basis, with a castor oil mask one week and a lemongrass oil mask the next, to fuel your hair’s growth and development for a thicker and more voluminous head of hair in just a few months.
