Magic Summer Essential Oil Blends

Who doesn’t love summer? The kids are out on holiday, the beaches are warm, and summer rain smells fantastic! But along with all this outdoor fun comes sunburn, creepy crawlers, skinned knees and mosquitos.

Sure, you can buy bug sprays, repellents and pain relief gels, but what if you want something more natural? Something that you feel safe using on your pets and family that’s free of toxic chemicals.

Have we got something for you! We’ve managed to put together the very best and most effective essential oil recipes for summer. Make these blends ahead of time and you’ll have a remedy kit full of safe and great-smelling potions to help you enjoy the summer without pain, without bugs, and without the doldrums.

Sunburn Relief Spray

This mixture is perfect for calming and speedy healing. Lavender and rosemary are natural anti-inflammatory agents and peppermint is great for relieving itching and burning quickly. The aloe vera gives an added boost of soothing.

  • 30 ml pure aloe vera gel
  • 20 drops lavender
  • 20 drops peppermint
  • 10 drops rosemary
  • purified water
  • spray bottle

In a 100 ml glass spray bottle, add the aloe vera gel and essential oils. Fill with purified water and shake well. Use as needed for sunburn pain.

(smaller spray bottles may be used with reduced amounts of ingredients)

CAUTION: Peppermint in large doses can be harmful to small children and infants. When using on children, reduce the peppermint to 5-7 drops and increase lavender to 25 drops.

Sunburn Relief Spray 2

This is another great spray to keep in your summer arsenal. The ingredients may be easier to find and it offers the same healing and soothing benefits.

  • 20 drops peppermint
  • 20 drops lavender
  • 10 ml vitamin E oil
  • witch hazel
  • spray bottle

In a 100 ml glass spray bottle, drop the essential oils and vitamin E oils. Fill with witch hazel and mix well. Use as needed for sunburn relief and speedy healing.

Poison Oak/Ivy Anti-Itch Rub

There’s nothing worse than the horrible itching and burning that come along with walking through a patch of poison ivy or poison oak! Even though we do our best to educate our families on the appearance of these poisonous plants, accidents happen!

  • 15 drops peppermint
  • 10 drops lavender
  • coconut oil
  • glass jar

In a mixing bowl, whip approximately 200 ml of coconut oil until creamy. Drop in the essential oils and mix well. Store in a glass jar away from direct sunlight and use when needed.

CAUTION: Peppermint in large doses can be harmful to small children and infants. When using on children, reduce the peppermint to 5-7 drops and increase lavender to 15 drops.

Bee Sting Ointment

Peppermint is always great to have around in case of stings or bites for its soothing and anti-itch properties

  • 2 drops peppermint
  • 2 drops lavender
  • coconut oil

For a bee or wasp sting, carefully remove the stinger and rub this mixture onto the affected area twice daily.

Antibacterial Ointment

Nothing beats the antibacterial and antiseptic properties of tea tree and lavender oil. Add to that the soothing and anti-inflammatory also present in the lavender, and you have a recipe for healing and soothing for minor cuts, burns and scrapes.

  • 5 drops lavender
  • 5 drops tea tree
  • roller bottle
  • carrier oil

Drop the essential oils into a glass roller bottle and fill with the carrier oil of your choice, such as almond, grapeseed or fractionated coconut oil. Roll onto affected areas twice a day.

Tick Repellant

The great thing about making insect repellants and other products with essential oils is that they are safe to use on both pets and children. Both of the essential oils in this recipe are natural deterrents to all kinds of insects, but has been found to be especially effective against ticks and fleas.

  • 20 drops eucalyptus
  • 20 drops lemongrass
  • large spray bottle
  • water

Drop the essential oils into a spray bottle and fill with water. Spray on pets and family members liberally before outdoor activities.

Summer Happy Diffuser Blend

Though the doldrums are most often associated with winter, it’s still a good idea to keep your air infused with positive energy. This blend not only helps with lifting the spirits, but will also keep your home smelling crisp, clean and summer fresh.

  • 5 drops bergamot
  • 2 drops lemongrass
  • 5 drops peppermint

Follow your diffuser’s directions for adding essential oils and water and diffuse whenever you need a little perking up. If the peppermint seems a little overpowering, reduce to 1-2 drops.

Bug Spray

This blend is extremely effective against mosquitos, but will also deter most all other insects, including the creepy crawly kind. Spiders hate peppermint! Keep this spray on hand in large amounts for the summer!

  • 20 drops peppermint
  • 20 drops lemongrass
  • 10 drops cinnamon
  • water
  • large spray bottle

CAUTION: Peppermint in large doses can be harmful to small children and infants. When using on children, reduce the peppermint to 5-7 drops and add a few extra drops of both lemongrass and cinnamon.

Insect Repellant Candle

These candles are great to have on hand to burn at picnics and patio parties. They smell great and keep most flying insects away.

  • 20 drops lemongrass
  • 20 drops peppermint
  • soy wax flakes
  • natural wick
  • large jar

Melt enough soy wax flakes to almost fill your glass jar, then mix in essential oils. Secure a wick in the jar, either with hot glue or by wrapping the end around a skewer to dangle from the top of the jar. Fill the jar with the wax mixture and store in a cool dry place to harden. Burn these in the doorways or windows to keep mosquitos outside the house.
