Clary sage essential oil is produced from the flowering tops and leaves of the Salvia sclarea herb, also known as common clary, see bright, clary wort, clear eye and muscatel sage. Clary sage is a member of the Lamiaceae, or Labiatae family. It is native to southern Europe but cultivated worldwide, especially in England, Morocco, Russia, the USA and the Mediterranean. Clary sage essential oil is extracted by steam distillation.

Clary sage essential oil is a colourless or pale yellow-green liquid with a sweet, nutty, fruity, herbaceous scent. It has a middle to top note and blends well with lavender, juniper, geranium, frankincense, jasmine, cedarwood, sandalwood, pine, lemongrass and the citrus oils.

Chemical Constituents

The main chemical constituents found in clary sage essential oil are:

  • linalyl acetate – an ester that has antispasmodic and sedative properties

  • linalol – an alcohol that has antiseptic, antispasmodic and sedative properties

  • germacrene-d – a terpene that has antiseptic properties.

Safety Considerations

Clary sage essential oil should be avoided during pregnancy. It should not be used before or after drinking alcohol as it can induce a narcotic effect and exaggerate drunkenness.

Historical and Traditional Uses

The word clary means ‘clear’. Clary sage was once known as Clear Eye; the mucilage from the seeds was used for clearing mucous and dust from the eyes. In the Middle Ages, the herb was used for digestive disorders, kidney disease, uterine and menstrual complaints, ulcers and as a general nerve tonic.
