ESSENTIAL OIL PROFILE: GRAPEFRUIT

Grapefruit essential oil is produced from the fresh peel of the fruit of the Citrus x paradisi tree, also known as Citrus racemosa, Citrus maxima var. racemosa or shaddock. A member of the Rutaceae plant family, grapefruit is considered to be a cross between the pomelo and the sweet orange. It is native to tropical Asia and the West Indies, and cultivated in Brazil, Israel, Florida and California, where the oil is mainly produced. Grapefruit essential oil is extracted by expression.

Characteristics

Grapefruit essential oil is a yellow or greenish mobile liquid with a fresh, sweet citrus aroma. It has a top note and blends well with bergamot, neroli, lemon, lavender, cypress, rosemary, palmarosa, geranium and the spice oils.

Chemical Constituents

The main chemical constituens found in grapefruit essential oil are:

  • limonene – a terpene that gives grapefruit its characteristic citrus aroma

  • myrcene – a terpene that has antibacterial properties and also contributes to grapefruit’s aroma

Safety Considerations

Grapefruit essential oil is generally non-toxic, non-irritating and non-sensitising. It may, however, be phototoxic, therefore sun exposure should be avoided for at least 12 hours after using grapefruit essential oil on the skin. Grapefruit oil has a short shelf life as it oxidises quickly.
