ESSENTIAL OIL PROFILE: ORANGE

Orange essential oil is produced from the peel from the fruit of the Citrus sinensis tree, also known as Citrus aurantium var. dulcis or sweet orange. A related species, Citrus aurantium var. amara, or bitter orange, also produces an essential oil. Orange is a member of the rutaceae plant family and is native to China but also cultivated in California, Florida, France, Spain and Italy. The essential oil is extracted by expression and is mainly produced in Israel, Cyprus, Brazil and North America.

Characteristics

Orange essential oil is a yellow-orange to dark orange mobile liquid with a sweet, fresh, fruity scent. It has a top note and blends especially well with neroli, lavender, jasmine, clary sage, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, lemon, myrrh and frankincense.

Chemical Constituents

The main chemical constituents found in orange essential oil are:

  • limonene – a terpene that gives orange its strong citrus scent

  • myrcene – a terpene that has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and sedative properties.

Safety Considerations

Orange essential oil is generally non-toxic, non-irritating and non-sensitising, however limonene may cause skin irritation in some individuals. Sweet orange essential oil is not considered to be phototoxic.
